As part of our Retoucher of the Year jury series, we're introducing the retouchers who help shape the standards our industry holds itself to.
Lisa Kokotova is a retoucher based in Kazakhstan with over eight years of experience specializing in beauty, fashion, and editorial retouching, including skin and hair work, for clients around the world. She discovered retouching through a love of photography that began at school, and has since built a freelance career working with photographers and brands across multiple markets. She combines technical precision with a commitment to natural, clean results - and a genuine passion for the community side of this industry.
BACK Why She Said Yes to the Jury in Seconds

How did you find your way into retouching, and what has kept you in it?
I was interested in photography at school, and then I decided to learn more about this industry and everything around it. I found some retouching videos and fell in love with the process and the before and after results. I still love the retouching industry and how retouchers can improve and change images.
How long have you been working in the industry, and what phase of your career are you in now?
I've been working in this industry for more than eight years. Now I'm a freelance retoucher, working for photographers and brands around the world.
What kinds of projects or environments have shaped your standards the most?
Beauty and fashion campaigns shaped my standards. I learned how to work with a whole team, how to work with tight deadlines, and how to work through multiple rounds of retouching. It really helped me improve my skills in both retouching and communication.

What made you want to be part of the Retoucher of the Year jury?
When I saw the email, I decided to say yes within a few seconds. Because it's not only a competition - it's an amazing project and a great opportunity to build a retouching community.
When working on major campaigns compared to smaller projects, what truly changes?
The client's attitude toward the project, the vision of the final result, and the clear structure of revisions. I always love to be part of a whole team where each person is included in the project.
When you open a new file, what do you look at first before touching anything?
I always look at the whole image and the colors, and create a list of retouching steps. I always follow the client's instructions.

When working at scale, how do you make sure nothing is missed?
I always check the brief first. For large projects, I create a workflow for how I'll tackle the project and in what order. I also double - or even triple - check the images before sending them.
Beyond technical ability, what really determines whether someone builds a sustainable career?
The ability to communicate with clients and manage your time correctly.
What do you think this industry needs more of right now?
Community and respect for each person who participates in production and post-production.

What is one insight you wish more retouchers understood early in their career?
Always practice. Try new ways of retouching so you can find your best approach. Be flexible and keep learning - so you can offer more to the people you work with.
A final note from us
Lisa's enthusiasm for this craft is immediate and infectious - and the fact that she said yes to the jury within seconds of reading the invitation tells you everything you need to know about her commitment to the retouching community. Her combination of technical precision, clear communication, and genuine desire to see this industry grow makes her a wonderful addition to this panel.
