As part of our Retoucher of the Year participant series, we're sharing the stories behind the people entering this year's competition.
Peter Schober is the founder of Artdepartment, a post-production studio based in Munich with 20 years of experience in high-end image work. Originally trained as a graphic designer, he moved to Berlin in 2005 to assist fashion photographer Kristian Schuller, where he learned retouching from the ground up. Since then he has built a freelance career with a deep focus on fashion, a long-standing collaboration with Studio Mierswa-Kluska, and a creative sensibility shaped as much by Rick Owens and Dries Van Noten as by anything he has done behind a screen.
BACK Why Fashion Is the Common Denominator of Everything He Does

Could you tell us a little about yourself and how you got into retouching?
I originally trained as a graphic designer. In 2005 I went to Berlin to assist Kristian Schuller - studioschuller.com - where I learned retouching fashion editorials with him and his wife Peggy.
Ironically, the beginning also marks the end. I am now trading the digital workspace for an entirely analogue one. I'm looking forward to the next chapter - leaving this world behind for good, spending less time in front of a screen, and focusing on analogue painting and modern art.

What do you enjoy most about retouching, and what type of work are you most drawn to?
Mostly fashion, which I consider a form of art - and spend all my money on. Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten, Hannes Roether. A lifetime passion. Probably the common denominator of everything I do.
What made you decide to enter Retoucher of the Year?
I always had the idea of a worldwide retouching competition, just for fun. Who is faster? Kidding.

Retoucher of the Year asks every participant to work from the same official competition images. What do you think this approach brings to the competition?
I'm very flexible by nature - just give me some pixels. But yes, same job for everyone. That feels right.
What are you hoping to get out of taking part?
Meeting and connecting with new people outside my daily studio life.

Where would you like to see the retouching industry five years from now?
I can't guess - everything is changing so fast right now. Let's see. I'm curious and optimistic. I hope individual ideas will always be stronger than AI reproductions. I use AI as a tool, though I'm not naturally drawn to it at all.
Is there a particular project or moment in your career you're especially proud of?
I feel especially honoured to have worked with people from Japan and Austria. I've always appreciated how kind, open and natural those collaborations felt - less business, more life.
And of course, I'm very grateful for the past 20 years of working freelance with Studio Mierswa-Kluska, being part of the team and working on set. It has been a truly special part of my professional life.

A final note from us
Peter's story is a rare one - a retoucher at the peak of his craft who has made the conscious decision to walk away from the screen and toward something entirely new. That he chose to enter this competition on the way out says something about what it means to him, and about the community he has been part of for two decades. We're glad he's here, and we're glad he's bringing that perspective with him.
We are very happy to welcome Peter Schober as a participant in Retoucher of the Year 2026.
